Who am I?________A Lover!

My name is Terrence Gavan and I’m in love with Newport, Rhode Island, Newport County, Rhode Island and Rhode Island in general.

I have lived here almost forever, but not forever. Therefore, I’m considered a “Carpetbagger.”If you weren’t born here…makes no difference when you arrived. You’re a “Bagger.”

My friends act like it’s important…poking fun at me. But they know that I know more about this place then they do.

I have studied Newport (meaning the area) in detail and have written extensively about this wondrous place.

What I have done so far

My first book was “The Complete Guide to Newport,” published way back in 1983. After a couple of updates, I wrote “The Barons of Newport, a Guide to the Gilded Age,” I revised the “Barons” once and then wrote “Exploring Newport,” a series nine walking tours covering the incredible variety of preserved and functioning Americana right here on this small island in the smallest state.

Known as the “City by the Sea, ” Newport was an economic powerhouse in colonial times. I like to call Newport the per capita cultural capital of the USA.

Incomplete Guide

Since I wrote “The Complete Guide to Newport,” Newport has seen lots of excellent books describing its wonder and glory.

With this effort, I am deviating from the mainstream and moving “off the beaten path,”… to the hidden, the little known….fascinating people, places and discoveries (many hard to find).

So as a guide this is incomplete. Others have filled the gap nicely
